Nanded (Maharashtra) [India], September 5: Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge visited Nanded on Thursday to meet the grieving family of the late Congress MP Vasantrao Chavan at his residence.

Both leaders extended their condolences to the family. Vasantrao Chavan, the MP from Nanded, passed away on the morning of August 26 at KIMS Hospital in Hyderabad.

The MP had been airlifted to Hyderabad from Nanded, where he was diagnosed with multiple health complications, including Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy, a brain dysfunction caused by reduced oxygen or blood flow to the brain.

The hospital revealed that he also suffered cardiac arrest due to respiratory failure and end-stage renal disease. Despite comprehensive treatment from a multidisciplinary team of doctors and being on ventilator support, his condition deteriorated, leading to a complete heart block and eventual cardiac arrest.

A press release from KIMS Hospital expressed deep sorrow over his passing: "We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and constituents. His passing leaves a void in our lives and the lives of those he served. May his soul rest in peace."

The Congress leader was elected from the Nanded constituency in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Several party figures, including Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, and Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee President Nana Patole, expressed their condolences to the late MP.

Rahul Gandhi, in a post on X, said, "The news of the demise of senior Congress leader, Nanded Lok Sabha MP Shri Vasantrao Chavan ji is extremely sad. While paying my heartfelt tribute to him, I express my deep condolences to the bereaved family. A popular grassroots leader, Shri Chavan supported and expanded the ideology of Congress throughout his life. His demise is an irreparable loss for the Congress family."
